Small Collection

A small publication I made awhile back that I stumbled onto. I love collage and I especially like painting onto collage to make a busy image. Some may say less is more but in this case I disagree. I find that as long as the images chosen match in colour pallet and composition the image will normally be effective. The use of white ink instead of black helps to keep a fluidity to the image.

Penguin Book Cover Design

As a part of my Uni work I have been designing a book cover for the Student Design Awards at Penguin books. I was most interested in the Adult Fiction book, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee so I decided to go with my gut instinct. I had read the book 4 years ago and absolutely loved it. The contrast between the light-hearted child’s voice and the harsh reality of the times makes for an interesting and emotional read. My intention was to produce a cover that hinted at the negative and dark aspects of the book, in previous editions it had been depicted as a subtle, feminine, childlike way that hid the¬†significance of the book.¬†I wanted to make a change.

Sketchbook work

I find that my sketchbook work tends to be very centered around portraits and quotes. I suppose that’s because I find faces to interesting and that I enjoy creating narratives in peoples faces.

Most of the time in my sketchbooks I draw in Biro or any black pen I have to hand. First I’ll find inspiration, either in image, person, object or quote and I’ll do a rough idea of what I want to page to look like and to make sure the features are accurate.

Then I go in with pen and once that’s done I decide if I want to add another aspect to make the drawing mixed media. Most of the time if I feel an image needs it I would add watercolour, either to add more tone or to brighten it up with some colour.
